Vantage Points
April 26, 2024- While browsing some of my images, a revelation struck me about landscape and street photography. I started noticing that the most resonant images came from a conventional perspective—one that offers a view anyone could experience. These are the scenes that allow viewers to say, "I've seen that too," creating a universal connection through its familiarity. Memories flow and the connection to a place strengthens.
While unconventional angles can evoke a sense of novelty and even angst, adding what some might call an artistic edge, these perspectives can sometimes feel fleeting. The novelty of a ground-level shot or a view from an unusually high vantage point might initially captivate, but just as we tend to clear out the clutter in our lives—those quirky, once-amusing items that no longer serve a purpose—such images might not hold a lasting place in our hearts or on our walls.
That said, I believe there's profound value in the normal, the everyday views we all share. It’s from these vantages that we might capture the most enduring, relatable images. Yet, this is just one perspective. What do you think? Does the power of an image lie in its ability to challenge our view, or in its capacity to reflect what's commonly seen? Does a bug’s eye view of a flower make you want to go out and lie in the grass? Do you imagine yourself as a participant? I invite you to share your own experiences with photography and perspective.
